Well, one of the best ways to practice and improve is through video games!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical games are fun, but they can be potentially dangerous for older adults<\/strong>. Poor balance, weak muscles, and vision issues can increase the risk of falling, leading to fractures and injury.<sup data-fn=\"613d7392-15b2-4ee6-88da-b77a234d0b5a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#613d7392-15b2-4ee6-88da-b77a234d0b5a\" id=\"613d7392-15b2-4ee6-88da-b77a234d0b5a-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, how do video games affect the brain, exactly?  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, let&#8217;s take a look at Yang et al.&#8217;s literature review, where they analyzed 47 studies with over 3,200 older subjects in total. They found that playing video games significantly <strong>improves the brain&#8217;s processing speed and overall cognitive function<\/strong>.<sup data-fn=\"abd4395b-51e2-4cd9-8d29-4b164173a6bf\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#abd4395b-51e2-4cd9-8d29-4b164173a6bf\" id=\"abd4395b-51e2-4cd9-8d29-4b164173a6bf-link\">6<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smaller literature review, this time on 17 studies and 1280 older adults in total, reported that playing video games helped <strong>reduce depression rates<\/strong>. But it was the <strong>games that had a physical component<\/strong> to them (e.g. Wii balance games, electronic step pads, exergames) that really had a significant impact on the subjects&#8217; mental health.<sup data-fn=\"50ceb8c6-9082-4b1f-936b-e231c88e7d89\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#50ceb8c6-9082-4b1f-936b-e231c88e7d89\" id=\"50ceb8c6-9082-4b1f-936b-e231c88e7d89-link\">7<\/a><\/sup>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that said, it&#8217;s important to note the cognitive functions enhanced by video games were&nbsp;<strong>limited to the type of tasks required in the game<\/strong>.<sup data-fn=\"3b3bb3c2-3674-4088-a9b3-fe31fb2f6809\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3b3bb3c2-3674-4088-a9b3-fe31fb2f6809\" id=\"3b3bb3c2-3674-4088-a9b3-fe31fb2f6809-link\">8<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, older adults who played immersive 3D video games for 30-45 minutes daily for 4 weeks enjoyed a memory boost, even though they were already experiencing age-related memory decline. Interestingly, these <strong>memory improvements lasted for up to 4 weeks after they stopped playing<\/strong> the games.<sup data-fn=\"352d0907-d6c8-44a2-a385-81e353e26a85\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#352d0907-d6c8-44a2-a385-81e353e26a85\" id=\"352d0907-d6c8-44a2-a385-81e353e26a85-link\">9<\/a><\/sup> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-types-of-video-games-help-make-you-smarter\">What types of video games help make you smarter?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The studies we\u2019ve quoted above reported that games with <strong>interactive and visually engaging content<\/strong> are best for cognitive enhancement.
